About the position
The Veterinary Technician provides veterinary technical assistance to the University at Albany's centralized animal welfare program and its Laboratory Animal Research Facilities (LARF), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and University faculty, staff, and students while providing ethical and compliant care for animals used in research and teaching. Assist Laboratory Animal Research Facilities staff and Veterinarian(s) in performing animal care, compliance/regulatory functions, husbandry, process improvement, and other related tasks. Effectively communicate between appropriate persons/entities (investigators, staff, vendors, Regulatory Research Compliance, Environmental Health and Safety, regulatory bodies, inspectors, etc.).
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
• Associate degree in veterinary/animal science from a college or university accredited by the U.S Department of Education or an internationally accrediting organization
• Minimum one year of experience working in a research environment with mice and rats
• Ability/willingness to participate in emergency on-call, weekend, and/or after-hours work
• Proficiency in veterinary techniques, including animal handling, anesthesia, surgical preparation, blood collection, and dosing.
• Ability to comprehend and follow SOPs and written instructions
• Ability to work with Microsoft suite, PP presentations, record-keeping, e-mailing, following instructions, and communicating effectively with others in multiple formats.
• Ability to multi-task with frequent interruptions and to self-schedule, meet deadlines and maintain confidentiality
• Ability to work independently and in a team, contributing to a positive work environment and to interact professionally with people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and attitudes. Training of novice and experienced employees, including non-native English speakers. Ability to work in ABSL-1, -2 areas and with chemical hazards
• Position requires the ability to lift at least 25 pounds and frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds
• Ability to pay close attention to detail, perform accurate dosing calculations independently, and perform quality record-keeping
