About the position
Working as part of the MPFI Animal Resources Center, the selected candidate will perform routine duties associated with cage sanitation and preparation for reuse in a research setting including cage maintenance, monitoring equipment for proper function and maintaining sanitary conditions.
In addition, the Animal Care Technician will operate mechanical washers and ensure cage washing and related equipment are in proper working order; perform routine start-up and shut down procedures; operate autoclaves to sterilize or decontaminate caging and equipment; assist in receiving and storing materials, food, and supplies; transport caging and supplies between animal rooms and cage wash facilities including intra-institutional transfers; and maintain sanitary condition of cage wash facilities and other ancillary areas including corridors and storage rooms. The selected candidate will work independently and will take necessary precautions to adhere to OSHA standards, other applicable federal and state regulations, and ARC standard operating procedures when working with hazardous agents, animals, and power equipment.
Duties may also include backing up other animal technicians when needed (including working with other animal species); monitoring animals during and after surgery; maintaining colony management software and daily health records; preparing diets; and performing other related duties, tasks and responsibilities as required or assigned.
Education and/or Experience
High School Diploma or Equivalent is required. Related experience is preferred. Organizational abilities, effective communication and interpersonal skills are required, in addition to the ability to build and maintain rapport and trust with a diverse population of people as well as internal colleagues and peers. The selected candidate must possess excellent judgment and the ability and desire to provide flexible customer service.
As essential personnel, the selected candidate must be available for weekend, holiday, and emergency rotations
